Education
The curriculum of Japanese studies was originally modelled mostly on
that of the University of Warsaw with intensive courses on Japanese conversation,
grammar and script concentrated in the three years of undergraduate (B.A.)
studies. Postgraduate (M.A.) students have another curriculum comprising
a M.A. seminar and other related subjects. Practical Japanese courses include
conversation, text readings, Japanese script (aimed at teaching about 2000
kanji), LL course. The Japanese grammar course comprises lectures and exercises
(4 hour a week) with the modern grammar taught for 4 semesters and classical
grammar for 2 semesters.
Until now over 120 M.A. theses have been written by graduates of the
department, covering a wide area of the Japanese classical and modern literature,
history, linguistics, traditional art, sociology and culture, film, religion
and some other particular topics. Many our graduates have been awarded
by the Japanese government scholarships for further study in Japan. The
level of the Japanese language teaching has been gradually and substantially
improved and at present our graduates acquire a solid knowledge of the
language after a 5-year study here. We have until now several winners of
the Japanese Language Speech Contest which have been held in Poland over
25 years.
The department has now near 80 students. Every year over 20 new students
are enrolled in the Japanese studies, which for a long time have been among
the most popular philological specialities in the university.
